DIY Lumbar Support.

If there's one thing SLK needs, it is lumbar support for the seats. The seats have no lower back support whatsoever and trips longer than one hour are a money maker for your local chiropractor. There are several options to improve comfort including: foam padding, pneumatic bladder and a electro-mechanical unit. Auto upholstery shop can charge anywhere from $100 for adding just foam, $200 for manual pneumatic pump, and $500 for electronically adjustable units.

If you are a Do-It-Yourself kind of person, you can easily do the following project of adding lumbar support. The tool needed is a long-nose plier. The work took about 30 minutes for one seat.

Lumbar foam wedges can be bought from foam store or furniture upholstery shops. This one cost $12. Try the foam and see if you'll need to make it thinner or narrower to fit the sit and your spine. The shop will cut it to you spec for free if you promised them a ride in your car. :-)

This view is bottom backside of the chair. Pull out the tail end of the fabric that holds the leather in place.

Pull the leather cover off by pulling the edge from the retaining groove in the seatback. This can be done by hand.

Long-nose plier can be used to take off the leather cover from the blue clips.

In the midsection of the seat, white "hosiery" holds a rod in place. Cut it to free the rod to the middle of the seatback (or enough to place the foam wedge.) Reattach the metal rod to the blue clips.

Slide in the foam wedge. "31" denotes foam density. Reattach the leather cover in reverse order.

The seat's pregnant! :-) I've reduced the thickness of the foam wedge since this picture was taken.

Done! Your back will thank you for it!
