Escort Passport SR1 Remote Radar/Laser Detector

Update: Since selling my SLK 320 and obtaining a SLK 32 AMG I removed the system to install it in the new car.

This allowed me to further document how the radar is installed.

This guide will include pictures from my SLK 320 AND my SLK 32 AMG

I have been looking for a good remote unit for years now. Finally I have found a unit that seems very good.

A review of this unit can be found at Radar Test.

I am used to using a Valentine One which is documented at V1 Installation in the SLK.

I really like the V1 but I wanted a more slealthy installation.

To find out more about the SR1 go to Escort's Passport SR1.

The SR1 is only available from certain Escort authorized centers. Click here to find and installer near you.

The unit consists of four major parts. The front radar/laser sensor, the rear laser sensor,

the interface module, and the display/controller.

The front radar/laser sensor is mounted in the front grill in the location depicted below on my SLK 320 Sport.

The grill is plastic and has many perforated holes so radar and laser can both be received.

Below is the actual unit installed on the 320.

Note that the unit is right next to one of the horns. This presents a problem.

Apparently the horn can set off the laser detector in the unit. So everytime I honked the horn in the 320,

the detector went off. Very irritating. I have corrected this problem in the new car which is explained later.

The rear laser sensor is designed for placement on the license plate. On an SLK this can pose some

problems. On 2001 SLKs, if the sensor is placed on the top of the plate it would block the trunk handle.

If placed in the bottom of the plate it would look bad. Also getting wires to the license plate is a bit

tricky on an SLK because the wires would have to travel along the complicated trunk/roof mechanism.

The solution is a simpler installation just under the rear bumper. Plus I get to keep my nice

license plate frame!

Inside the car there is a perfect place for the unit.

Just under the radio in the compartment in front of the gear selector.

This is what it looks like in my 320.

The installation is very clean and very stealthy.

It seems to have similar sensitivity as my V1.
